Chow Chow Puli Kootu

Generally we prepare kootu with dal and coconut. I has run out of coconut to prepare the usual kootu, and tried this out like a semi pitlai kind of kootu. Chayote being so versatile, blended well!!!

Chayote - 1
Tamarind - size of a lemon
Red Chili - 2
Coriander Seeds - 1 tbsp
Gram Dal - 1 tbsp
Urad Dal - 1/2 tbsp
Asafoetida - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - a little
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil for cooking

Pressure cook cubed chayote with tamarind extract and water if needed.
Dry roast and grind red chilli, coriander seeds, gram dal, urad dal, asafoetida into a fine powder. I ground the curry leaves as well together, because people throw it away generally.
Heat 1 tbsp oil, add mustard seeds and once it splutters, add cooked chayote, tamarind water used for cooking, ground masala powder, salt and allow to boil till the gravy is thick enough; and serve with dal and rice.
