Oats Kanji

Very healthy and nutritious Oats gruel is a quicky. I always preferred Oats to other porridge ingredients, coz of the fiber content and cholesterol lowering properties. My mom used to prepare it with buttermilk and salt and my MIL with milk and jaggery. The salt version tastes like porridge and the jaggery one like payasam, both yummy in their own way.
Ingredients
Oats 2 tbsp
Water - 1/2 cup
Jaggery - 1 1/2 tbsp (shredded)
Milk - 1 cup
or
Butter Milk - 1 cup
Cumin powder - 1/4 tsp
Carom seed powder - 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
Salt to taste

Method
Boil water and add the oats and keep stirring for 5 minutes.
For the sweet version, when the oats is cooked well add jaggery and milk. Tastes well when consumed warm.
For the salt version, once oats is cooked switch off gas, add buttermilk, cumin powder, carom seed powder, asafoetida and salt. You can try this with a piece of narthangai or mavadu thanni.

Bon Appetit!!
